Understanding Basement Waterproofing

You definitely shouldn’t underestimate basement waterproofing. If you don’t want to come home to a basement that has become a mini pool, then securing a good system for waterproofing should be a priority. Aside from the possible danger of flooding, your basement could also get occasional small water leaks. This can cause molding which can be harmful to both your health and the valuable items in your basement.

All basements are not exempt from gradual water entry. During rainy seasons, the soil that holds the water can exert pressure on the walls of the basement. If you look closely at your basement walls, you may notice small cracks with a white build up around them. This is a sign that water may already be seeping in from your walls. Most of the time though, water leaks can happen on the joints of the floor and walls.

If you have a serious water problem, to keep the basement dry, you have several choices. The most effective is to have a waterproofing contractor install a ...

You may be constructing your own home. If this is the case waterproofing should happen before the completion of the house. Contractors usually resort to a technique called bonding. They install protective membranes around the walls of your basement to prevent water entry. In some cases, special walls may also be installed on the inside walls of the basement for further protection. Some of the product names associated with this type of waterproofing includes Deco 20 Seal Waterproofing Membrane, B-Dry Rigid Sealer and Dura-Systems Rubber Coating.

Waterproofing is an entirely different story if you bought a pre-built house. It is likely that the previous owner may already have a system in place. You may however, have to make a couple of additions to enhance the existing waterproofing system. One great element to add is a drainage system on the wall and floor joints. You can use SquidGee Dry, WaterGuard or other similar products.

With a drainage system in place, all you need is a good sump pump. The sump pump collects the water from the drainage channels and expels it out away from your basement. Do remember though that a sum pump with only a single power source may fail to work when you lose power. Some of the newer pumps however may have a secondary power source that can kick in during power outages.

There are other things to consider if you live in an area prone to frequent rains. Too much rain may put a strain on your basic waterproofing system. The best way to ensure greater basement protection would be to create a better external drainage system. This will make sure that water is instantly removed from the area before it can saturate the soil and put pressure on the basement walls.

You may be able to manage on your own if you just need to install internal drainage. In cases of sever flooding however, you may need the help of a contractor or service provider. You do have to make sure though that the contractor of your choice has had a good reputation and experience in its line of business. Some companies you can try contacting are Basement Systems and B-Dry System service providers.

You should consider basement waterproofing as soon as possible. A good system is the only real way you can protect your basement and the things in it. If you act too late, you may have more damage to deal with. Once a system is in place, make sure you check it constantly to determine the need for reinforcement.
